In this post, we’re sharing some of the best routes to check out, so grab your shoes and get ready to explore. 🥾

Lee on Solent

🦀 We parked up at Salterns car park and then walked east along the promenade past the sailing club, on route there’s a playground, playing field, and beach huts and the flat pathway running right along the beach is perfect for those with pushchairs.

☕️ After some fun on the beach with the dog and around 3k of walking east we came to the marine parade and the high street of Lee on solent where there’s lots of cafes, bakeries and shops. Some spots were dog friendly and others not, most serving your standard British fare like jacket potato’s, sandwiches, and fish and chips etc. one spot we visited was a tad confusing with the prices and no menu, sit in/takeaway prices so do ask before settling on a spot.

🛩️ There’s so info boards on the aviation history of Lee on Solent with its seaplanes and links to Calshot too, and you can see plenty of small aircraft flying overhead up close as they come in to land, in the summer you can even see the amazing spitfires that do special experiences for clients from the airport.

🥾 The walk to the shops and cafes area of Lee on solent from Salterns car park was around a 5-6k round trip and we a 3 hour parking session was plenty at a relaxed walk pace.

Portchester Castle

A Portchester castle micro adventure in Fareham, Hampshire ⚓️🏰🥾

☕️ Salt Cafe

First stop, we parked up at the boatyard by salt cafe and enjoyed a hot drink and brunch inside, this spot overlooks the tidal waters which opens out on to Portsmouth harbour. Low tide during our visit but lots of birds to spot from the window table with stools. Nice coffees and girls enjoyed white hot choccies and their full English brekkie was decent.

Their outdoor terrace area is also great for dog walkers to enjoy as well as a long pontoon area with picnic benches. Takeaway pod for those on the move.

🥾 The walk to Portchester Castle

Heading east from the cafe, It’s around a 5-6k round trip walk, 50 mins one way at a leisurely pace and very easy to follow route as it’s a coastal pathway which hugs the shoreline. Very easy walking but not sure buggy friendly as paths quite narrow and some overgrown.

Lots of interesting scenery and things along the way to keep even the youngest entertained, such as scouring the beach for interesting things, two playgrounds on route, both overlooking the water, there’s also a basketball court, we saw a sleeping fox lying in the sun on a garden shed roof, lots of dogs, clearly a dog walkers fave. Also another cafe halfway called 84 by the shore which looks like a converted house garage and had plenty of hot and cold drinks.

🏰 Portchester Castle

It’s quite the sight as you turn the corner of the coastal pathway to see the medieval fortress of the castle. It’s an English heritage site but you can walk around the walls and inside the grounds for free, the paid element is a corner area of the grounds where you can also climb a tower for great views if you wish.

There’s also two food and drink spots inside, one is a van vendor with tables outside by the walls of the front gate and the other a cafe in the church open at specific times.

We had a nice stroll around the grounds which looks marvellous and very photogenic against the waterside backdrop with yachts passing. There’s also public loos by the castle car park you can use.

Brownwich Beach

Brownwich Beach offers a peaceful escape along the coast, perfect for a tranquil walk. Located near Titchfield Haven Nature Reserve, this unspoiled beach is a great spot to explore while enjoying beautiful views of the Solent. 🌊☀️

The walk along the shoreline is serene, with soft sands and quiet surroundings, making it ideal for nature lovers and those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle. Along the way, you can take in the coastal scenery, spot local wildlife, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this hidden gem. 🌸

Titchfield Haven

Park up for free at Chilling Car Park (Thatcher’s Copse), walk 2 minutes through a wooded area, it opens out on to a pathway by open fields with crops which change every year, you take a narrow pathway for around 10-15 minutes which is squeezed between the vast fields. ☀️

You then come to the top of a little cliff edge which has amazing views over the waterwith Isle of Wight opposite and Fawley and Calshot to your right, you take either left or right path to walk 5 minutes to get down to Meon shore beach to find a quiet spot on the stretching pebble beach. 🌊

Enjoy a picnic (either homemade or quick meal deal depending on the effort), let the kids/dogs enjoy a run around, skimming stones, searching for crabs, some people watching and more.

Holly Hill Woodland Park

We love walking the circular route at Holly Hill Woodland Park, with plenty to see along the way. The trail takes you to a scenic viewpoint over the river, past a tranquil lake, and by mini waterfalls.

The park is full of landscaped areas with lakes, waterfalls, and islands, surrounded by a mix of exotic trees and native oaks. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy nature and take in the beauty of both familiar and unique plant life.

Titchfield Canal

This is a brilliant family day on the tichfield canal to enjoy with strawberry picking, a walk by nature reserve and a hidden gem lunch spot 👏🏽

Pick your own strawberries at Steve Harris Pick Your Own

First up we headed to a fave family run spot on its opening day. Steve Harris Pick Your Own in Titchfield is a great place to enjoy picking with family or friends and you can buy a large tub for a fiver and off you go! 🫡

⏱️ open every day, 7 days a week, from 9:30-16:00.

📍 Meon Bye Farm, Triangle Ln, Titchfield, Fareham PO14 4HB

Titchfield canal walk

Next up we drove 5 mins round the corner to Titchfield canal car park which is free and by the village.

This is a very simple linear walk, around 7k in total, 3.5k one way to the beach. A pathway running along Titchfield canal on one side and Titchfield haven nature reserve with plenty of wildlife to spot from heron to geese and if you are lucky other visiting birds. It’s a nice peaceful route, apart from today which was accompanied from the welcome sounds and sights of planes showcasing their manoeuvres over the nearby Lee on solent airport for the D Day anniversary events.

One way from car park to beach took us around 40 mins with the kids. Parts are buggy friendly but it does get narrow and overgrown in parts so carrier recommended if with younger. we did see some bikes and plenty of doggies on route. At the beach you can public loos and an ice cream truck to enjoy a treat at the end.

Hidden gem cafe in the village – Hallmark Jewellers & The Wine Garden

A real hidden gem as you walk past this village shopfront which is a jeweller’s but then out the back you are presented with a garden oasis and lovely cafe.

✨The 12th century building hosts a quaint cafe with beautiful courtyard. The friendly chatty staff welcomed us and it was warm enough to sit in the garden surrounded by flowers, plants and a water feature with a collection of colourful fish in. The kids even were given some fish food to feed them too.

🍸Drinks on offer were coffees with mozzo, lovely cocktail list, we enjoyed the rhubarb and ginger mojito made with their own made syrup and milkshakes that were a feast for the eyes huge, and flavours like the Biscoff and cookies and cream that we got🤤Wine too of course being a wine garden!

🍴 small plates, mains, bagels and specials on the menu so perfect for brekkie, brunch or lunch. A big focus on sourcing local with meats from the butchers opposite them, and the local gardener also sometimes supplies produce from her allotment , for example the potato’s in the lamb dish we had. The bagel was tasty from local supplier ‘The bagel man’ and our highlight was the specials dish lamb as well as salad. Ranged from £10-15.

100 Acre Wood/Forest of Bere

We parked up at west walk car park which was a large one and very popular with families, it has picnic areas, toilets, a coffee vendor and fenced playground for younger kids as well as one in the woodland next to it for older kids and lots of obstacles. 🌳

There was a large information board with a variety of routes and we headed on the 5k options which was well signposted and a wide gravel pathway as well as a more narrow woodland one which was nearer the woodend car park. 🪵

The forest was spectacular and our highlight of the walk was the allocated den building area which we spent quite some time in competing on who could make the best/most waterproof/cosiest/best protection from trolls.

Yussi the dog also enjoyed the various streams and puddles and finding every single patch of mud she could find of which there were plenty.
