Oakley Hall Hotel

A family friendly stay at Oakley Hall Hotel in the Hampshire countryside near Basingstoke 🛏️🌳🦌

AD – This weekend we headed to north Hampshire for a family stay at Oakley Hall Hotel which is a luxury manor house hotel in the Hampshire countryside. With the nearby village of Steventon, the birthplace of famed novelist Jane Austen, oak hall has history which dates back to 1795 and links to her too.

We pulled up along the long driveway to the main hotel building and it was surrounded by green countryside and fields, kids excited to explore in the back! It’s a family friendly hotel as well as a dog friendly hotel too which is sometimes rare for luxury hotels. We could see there was going to be plenty of space to run around and enjoy, it’s for 315 acres of beautiful grounds, woodland and gardens.

After a swift check in at the reception with friendly staff, we headed to our family room which was of a great big size to relax in. Running over to the window, it also overlooked the grounds and a lovely running fountain too. Other highlights in the room included a very spacious bathroom, complete with rubber duckie ready for the bath, as well as speakers which play the music from the tv as you sit in your bath. All the other standard amenities in the room including fridge, coffee and tea corner, tv, storage space etc, the bed was massive and very comfy indeed.

They have 50 bedrooms, so along with the large grounds, it makes it a popular country wedding venue in Hampshire too. Oh, they are also dog friendly for their weddings too!

For our dinner and breakfast we headed to the hotels’ two AA Rosette Glasshouse Restaurant which has a focus on seasonal dishes highlighting locally sourced & home-grown produce, some of which come from their very own kitchen garden. Again, with the dog friendly aspect of the hotel, they had a separate area for guests with their pups which was well thought out. They had a kids menu and the staff were very attentive and patient with the children which is always appreciated for parents. The food was well presented and all dishes were delicious, cost wise’ it’s more on the fine dining side we would say. On the drinks menu, they serve up a very local and famous spirit, Bombay Sapphire Gin which has it’s distillery just ten minute drive away in Laverstoke where you can visit for a distillery tour or just pop into their gift shop or café and it’s located right on the river test, a stunning spot.

Breakfast was a big highlight, particularly the crispy hash browns, they had a self serve continental bar with all sorts including smoothies, and then you ordered a hot dish too. The bounding large hares outside on the lawn as we ate breakfast was an entertaining aspect too. Another bonus of a hotel in the quiet countryside.

Finally time to explore the outdoors to burn off that brekkie, the weather wasn’t that great with some light rain, so the colour hunter wellies available for guests to borrow at reception were most welcome. These small and simple touches always go down well for those with young ones as these sort of things can turn into a little fun game and finding a fave colour or those that fit and don’t.

Charging outside, the nice fountain first, then eyes on a large tree which hosted a swing to fly into the air on, including adults of course. The grounds featured a very interesting area of woodland areas with some pretty unique spots, including an area which had hedges resembling different creatures or animals frozen in time, a bit like the white witches garden in Narnia.

Overlooking an adjoined farmers field we spotted a herd of deer, before heading to the walled kitchen garden which dates back to 1860. As we were visiting at the end of winter, there wasn’t much in season, but we could see when it is the kitchen team and ultimaytely guests must love it as they use the seasonal vegetables and fruit in the menus, such as apples, peaches, figs, berries and plums.

Whether you are looking for a local getaway, a base whilst exploring more of Hampshire, a family or dog friendly break or even a wedding venue, than Oakley Hall Hotel makes a rather good fit.

Aviator Hotel

The Aviator is a sleek hotel is located overlooking Farnborough airport so a very unique spot to stay, particularly with the kids who will be awed by the planes landing and taking off just outside their window.

In north east Hampshire you can enjoy a stay at this luxury hotel overlooking Farnborough airport. Its got 169 rooms and is a rather striking build both inside and out, as I recalled when I filmed it for a work project a few years back, particularly the lobby which is one the more stunning you will see for its photogenic stairwell leading up to reception and open floors.

The location is famous for its aviation history with a museum just down the road as well as remnants of its past such as the former portable airship hanger we visited nearby too. Check in was swift and we headed up to the 4th floor via the elevator which had a cool frame with a cloudy sky timelapse on a loop in which both baffled and delighted the youngest as it felt like we headed to the skies.

The sky suite we stayed in was perfect for families with its large open plan style, a lounge area with free movies as well as a super king size bed. The large bathroom featured a tropical shower and yet another funky feature which the kids loved and immediately wanted to use, Bath tv! The most impressive feature for the room was the views and perfect point for plane spotters with wide glass windows overlooking the runway at the airport to watch landings and take offs. Suitable name for the hotel and the decor to suit too.

There was plenty of chill areas around the hotel lobby and the decor inside the hotel is sleek with dark colours. The fitness suite downstairs was well equipped with all the modern equipment and even had a large monitor in front of the bigger piece of kit with video workouts to select from.

They have a range of dining areas to choose from in the hotel from the more casual to fine dining. We enjoyed breakfast in the downstairs brasserie restaurant which also features an outdoor seating area. Loved the movie posters of stars from the golden era and again an elegant sleek look to the place with low hanging lamps over the tables. Highlights at brekkie included smoothies, overnight oats and freshly made waffles for the kids.

Old Thorns Hotel & Resort

A family stay at Old Thorns Hotel & Resort in liphook, Hampshire 🛏️🌳🍴⛳️

This hotel and resort in east Hampshire has apartments which are a great option for a family break especially for larger families and family gatherings and celebrations.

🛏️Accommodation – Apartment

The resort has a range of accommodation options, I’ve previously stayed for a work trip in the hotel rooms but this time we stayed in one of their two bedroom apartments which overlooks the golf course. On arrival we flung open the large curtains by the lounge windows with sliding doors and some friendly ducks came over to greet us 🦆 There’s something always exciting for the kids having a home away from home with lounge, kitchen etc to relax in and we enjoyed cooking our noodles lunch too. Two bedrooms so one for the parents and one for the kids, each with an en-suite. Nice large space for a family and movie nights were a highlight. We even saw a group of friends hiring an apartment for a baby shower, too idea.

🍴Food and drink

The hotel has a few options for food and drink, we had a nice 3 course dinner at Kings restaurant which has a lively atmosphere with wedding receptions next door on the weekends, the kids rather enjoyed singing along to those reception classics like Ed Sheeran haha. The sports bar offered a more casual dining experience and we ate there on the second night and had the likes of chicken enchilada, burgers, salads etc. the kids fave was Oties, an American style parlour serving up pancakes, waffles and ice cream as well as coffee and cake with plenty to look at inside with props and colourful interiors.

🏊Swimming, spa and fitness centre

I do love my swimming so a larger 20 metre pool was perfect for some morning laps and they have a large fitness suite open to members too which overlooks the greenery of the grounds. It’s packed with kit and also has classes to join at a fee too if you wish. The pool has kids swimming times two times a day so we all enjoyed as a family and mum enjoyed the sauna, steam room and they even had a foot spa area as well as ice shower ❄️🥶

📍Exploring the resort

On the Saturday evening, the sun and blue skies were out so a walk around the pathways of the golf course went down a treat with its lakes and woodland with plenty of wildlife to spot. In the winding hallways of the resort we enjoyed turning corners to discover some quirkier sides…Think Bumblebee in the Sports Bar, thrones for some snaps, life size Oscars!

⛳️Golf

The resort has an 18 hole golf course situated next to the main buildings, it was closed for maintenance during our visit but open again in a week or so, I would have definitely headed out early morning for a quick round of 9 if so! In the meantime we headed down to the pro shop where outside they have a top tracer driving range so we selected some games on the screens and hit a few balls. The kids definitely improved but not sure the crocs footwear helped 🐊😅

🛣️Out and About

The family friendly Birdworld is nearby and they also have Alice Holt country park just down the road. The hotel is on the South Downs national park and also has the meon valley nearby so lots of brilliant walks. Petersfield nearby well worth a visit.

Lainston House

Lainston House is a stunning countryside hotel for families to enjoy just outside of Winchester centre, although it doesn’t have a pool and spa, it does have some other unique facilities and is a regular spot for team building days as lots of fun things to do. They have a big focus on fresh seasonal ingredients at the hotel so having a large kitchen garden to explore is a great way to teach kids where there food comes from on the plate. They also have their very own cooking classes and facility. Other country sports like fishing is available and bird experiences for the kids. 🦉

The impressive view down their avenue of lime trees showcases that this place is all about letting the kids get and about in nature, lots of walks on the doorstep too and one of our highlights is the Stockbridge and Test Valley area, a very short drive away. 🌳

Nearby attractions include Marwell Zoo and Peppa Pig World which are a fan favourite with the kids so makes it the perfect choice for a luxury family get away for the kids and adults alike to love!
